This summer was the third time I have gone to Senegal to visit family friends, but the only time when I could understand a lot more of what they were saying because of taking French in high school. As we read in “Me Talk Pretty One Day” by David Sedaris, he mentions that when he knew very little all he wanted to do was speak the language, which I can assume is the same with most people, but not me. Although Sedaris also felt uncomfortable to speak when his teacher started to criticize him and the other students on how they spoke. Sedaris and I were in the same situation but he found a way out sooner than I did. The family, who has known me since I was born, spoke Wolof, their native language, French, and English. I knew that they could speak English because they have come over to the states many times to visit and I have visited them twice before, but what they didn’t know was that I could speak French and I took advantage of this.
